"To the upright I will show the saving power of God."
~ Psalm 50
Dear SJB Families,
We are members of such a blessed community. Mr. Eric has been overwhelmed by everyone’s support. Fr. Augustine, Fr. Damien, and Fr. Norbert have all visited him at the hospital. Mr. Reilly was able to take him beautiful cards from 3B classroom (more will continue to follow). We are working diligently to have the lunch program continue in Mr. Eric’s absence. Mr. David Nguyen, an SJB alumni, is going to work with Mr. Eric and continue the food service. There may be some logistical changes. We will keep you posted. In order to help support Eric and his family during this time, we will be starting a GoFundMe page for them. Please look for the link early next week.
We have two upcoming events that will require changes to the school calendar during trimester three:
- Our first change will be that Easter vacation will be extended to include April 20 and April 21. Our teachers will attend two days of professional development offered through the diocese. This unique opportunity is supported by Fr. Augustine, school superintendent, Dr. Barisano, Bishop Vann, and Abbot Eugene. The Diocese recognizes that the foundation of St. John's is our Catholic identity, and from that foundation we have established a strong, child-centered academic program. These two days of training will provide our teachers with additional strategies to build and develop our current program. We are eager to avail ourselves of this opportunity and thank our SJB community for your support and understanding.
- Our second set of changes are required due to an unavoidable conflict with the Baker Street Bash. Our annual festival needs to be moved to the weekend of May 29-31. The changes to the calendar that are necessary for this to happen have been made. We have attached a PDF file of the April, May, and June calendar pages with all of these changes. As the events approach we will continue to send update reminders about the changes. There are also hard copies of these three months in the Front Office if you prefer. Please refer to these pages and not the wall calendar that was sent home back in August.
Our bountiful blessings continue also in other ways. Our TK2 program is quickly filling up for next year. There are just a few open spots remaining and then we will need to start a wait list. Our new TK1 three day also has strong enrollment. God is so good to us. We have received many wonderful suggestions for the saints that will adorn our Early Childhood Center on the newly commissioned mural. We will soon be announcing the results.
During this second week of Lent we continue to try to make use of more reflective time each day. We are using all the resources available to us to practice new habits and patterns. We are still in the beginning stages of that process, so we shouldn't be discouraged if it takes more practice. Each of us will be able to grow in our ability to have brief conversations with our Lord. Whether driving or shopping, doing laundry or paying bills, working in our office or walking down the hall to the bathroom, we can use brief "background" moments to connect with our Lord. These moments of "contemplation in action" will give a character and shape to our day. Lent becomes a living reality for us when our days are spent with the Lord, listening to his love for us, calling us to gratitude and freedom. (Source: Creighton University Online Ministries)

Mrs. Viles and Fr. Damien
"No act of virtue can be great if it is not followed by advantage for others. So, no matter how much time you spend fasting, no matter how much you sleep on a hard floor and eat ashes and sign continually, if you do no good to others, you do nothing great."
~ St. John Chrysosthom
