SJB Catholic School-Jr. High Latin Program
Philosophy of the Program:

In requiring all Junior High students to take Latin, St. John’s wishes to introduce them to one of the most important keys to a classical education.  This introduction is viewed primarily as an enrichment program which begins to offer students the well-known advantages reaped by the study of Latin.  Keeping in mind the mandatory nature of the program for all Junior High students, the school wishes both to challenge the academically advanced students while meeting the needs of those who demonstrate less aptitude in this subject area. The teacher will use a variety of pedagogical strategies and assessment techniques to ensure student learning and success.  In addition to reaping the advantages of the study of Latin, it is also hoped that the program will encourage students to continue the study of Latin in secondary and higher education.

Goals:
  1.  To foster students’ love for the classics.
  2.  To introduce students, on a level appropriate to their age, to the fundamentals of the language (including basic grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation).
  3.  To enhance the English vocabulary and grammar skills of the students.
  4.  To strengthen students’ reading skills.
  5.  To improve math problem solving skills.
  6.  To familiarize students with the official language of the Roman Catholic Church and her Liturgy.
  7.  To give students who decide to pursue Latin studies beyond St. John’s a true advantage.
